The Enniscrone black pig is a myth that has been around for hundreds of years. It goes something like this:
The Black pig was a huge boar with large bristles that were poisonous, and anyone who touched these bristles would die. He came from the water on to the Enniscrone shore from Donegal, and ran rampageous through the town killing everyone in its path. The towns people seeing this, got together with their spears, hay forks, billhooks and any other sharp farm instruments they had, and ran the Black Pig out of town and up to a small town land now known as “Muckduff” (which is Irish for “Black Pig”) where he was killed. The Black Pig was so large they could not move him, so the town’s people had to cover him with large amounts of stone and earth.
Over the last few years there has been a song written about the black pig, T-shirts & hats printed up, and there has been a sculpture made out of concrete and can be seen outside Toms Top Ten on the main street {pictured above}. At one stage the sculpture was the biggest moneybox in Ireland
